HAMBANTOTA, SRI LANKA — A baby elephant was rescued Sunday May 29. in Sri Lanka after taking quite the nasty fall.
The calf fell down open the storm drain at some point while walking near the town of Hambantota. After falling, the animal reportedly broke it one of its legs.
Elephant herds are a common in the area and roam freely, but this poor thing was just plain unlucky. According to the Mirror, locals used sledgehammers and even a blow torch at one point to help with the rescue.
Footage from Sri Lankan television shows the beautiful moment rescuers manage to free the elephant. Working with rescuers, they tied ropes around the calf's legs, then pulled it out the storm drain.
Afterwards the animal was taken to a local hospital where it was treated for its injuries.
