Oh how the mighty have fallen. Hollywood stars seemingly think they’re above the law when it comes to being convicted for serious crimes. From theft, domestic abuse and even murder, the following ten celebrities have fallen so far from grace there’s seemingly no way to climb back up. Stars, by their very nature, like to challenge conventions and go against the grain in their dogged quest to keep their light burning. Some may think there’s no such thing as bad publicity, or what’s worst than being talked about is not being talked about. But no man or woman is above the law, despite the riches, beauty and international travel and exceptional talent, at the end of the day, these are people after all, so must comply with the law, no matter what the cost.
Since Hollywood began, numerous encounters between Tinseltown and the tink of cell door have seemingly gone hand-in-hand. There was Frank Sinatra who was arrested in 1938 for having an affair with a married woman in New Jersey, charges of which were later changed to adultery. In 1967, Mick Jagger was arrested and jailed for narcotics in London. The Doors’ Jim Morrison was arrested in 1970 for indecent exposure at a Miami concert in 1969. Jimi Hendrix was arrested at Toronto International airport for carrying heroin and hashish on him. Charges were dropped after he told police they were slipped into his suitcase by a fan.
But perhaps one of the most audacious incidents in Hollywood history was when Patty Hearst, the granddaughter of esteemed newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, was kidnapped by a group called the Symbionese Liberation Army in February 1974. She later claimed that she was brainwashed into fighting on the side of her captors, something the judge didn’t believe when she was sentenced to seven years in prison for armed robbery and gun charges. She was later released from prison after then American president Jimmy Carter lessened her sentence. To this day, questions still remain over what turned the one-time heiress into a political radical, robbing banks and shooting people, and now to domestic goddess?
